Paper Assignment Two Philosophy 233
Second paper assignment

General structure of the paper:

The papers will have the same structure as the first papers. The grading standards for parts 2 and 3 have been slightly altered.

Topics:

* If a doctor knows about the possibility of implicit bias against group X, and [conditions], then the doctor is morally obligated to change their treatment of patients from group X as follows: _______. If a doctor knows about the possibility of implicit bias against group X, but [conditions are not met], then the doctor is not morally obligated to change their treatment of patients of group X at all. (Note: I don't want you in your thesis to specify what group "X" refers to; the idea is that this should apply to any sort of implicit bias against any group that one might have biases against)

* For any person A, if [conditions], then A's continuing to live is overall good for A. If [conditions are not met], then A's continuing to live is not overall good for A. (By "overall good for A," I mean that A's welfare is more positive than negative if they continue to live)

* If [conditions], then [active/passive (pick one)] euthanasia is morally permissible. If [conditions are not met], it is morally wrong. (Passive euthanasia here includes withdrawing treatment in order to let a patient die. You are free to argue that active/passive euthanasia is always permissible, or never permissible)

* If [conditions], then it is morally wrong for a person to not [end their life / ask to have their life ended (pick one)]. If [conditions are not met], then it is permissible for a person to not do so. (You can also argue that it is never wrong for a person to not end their life or ask to have their life ended; if you want to write about that, you have to talk about both the ending and asking options)

* I'm also open to you arguing for a thesis that is not on this list. If you are interested in doing so, please contact me. Alternate theses must be approved by me in writing.
